Who we are
Dicteer is a product of WAMELINK (Dennis Wamelink), Herengracht 320, 1016 CE Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Chamber of Commerce (KvK) 60225432. WAMELINK is responsible for the data described in this policy. Send privacy questions to info@dicteer.com.
In short
- Your voice only goes to the speech service you choose, and only when you tap the dictate button yourself.
- We don’t keep recordings or text. Not on your device and not on our server.
- On your iPhone you can also dictate fully offline. Then nothing leaves your device.
- This website uses no cookies and no trackers.
What Dicteer processes
When you dictate, the app records your voice into a temporary file. That file goes to a speech service that turns it into text. If cleanup is on, that text then goes to a language model that tidies up punctuation, capitals and filler words. Your word list and your style examples go along as a hint, so names are spelled right and the text sounds like you.
Who it goes to
That depends on what you choose in the settings:
- OpenAI (United States), for recognition and cleanup. This is the default.
- Mistral (France), for both. Choose this if you want your data to stay in the EU.
- On your iPhone. Recognition happens on your device, without internet and without AI cleanup. Nothing goes to a service.
If you use your own API key, the app talks directly to OpenAI or Mistral. WAMELINK doesn’t receive your recordings or text. What OpenAI and Mistral do with the data is set out in their own terms: OpenAI’s privacy policy and Mistral’s privacy policy.
With an invitation code
If you have an invitation code, you don’t need your own key. Your recording and text then go through the Dicteer server (hosted with Cloudflare) to OpenAI. The server only passes them on. It doesn’t keep recordings, text or a log of your requests. The server does keep:
- your invitation code and the link with your device, both only as a hash (a kind of fingerprint), not the code itself;
- per code, per day and per month: how many dictations, how much audio (in bytes) and the estimated cost, to prevent abuse and runaway costs;
- a hash of your IP address, to block too many attempts. It’s deleted within about an hour.
What stays on your device
- The audio file is deleted after processing. Any leftover files are cleaned up the next time the app starts.
- Your API keys and your invitation code link are stored only in your iPhone’s or Mac’s keychain. Not in iCloud, not in files and not in the log.
- Your word list, style examples and settings stay on your device.
- The last raw and inserted text only live in the app’s memory and disappear when the app stops.
- The log contains times and character counts, never the text itself.
On the Mac
The shortcut only listens for modifier keys, such as Fn and Option. Dicteer doesn’t read or store anything you type. To paste the text, Dicteer briefly puts it on the clipboard with a label that tells clipboard managers to skip it, then puts your previous clipboard back.
Waitlist
If you join the waitlist, we store:
- your email address;
- the language of the page you signed up on (Dutch or English);
- where you came from, if the link that brought you to the site says so (a newsletter, for example), and otherwise just “site”;
- the date you signed up.
We only use this to email you about Dicteer, such as letting you know the app is out. Nothing else. The waitlist is stored with Cloudflare.
We keep your details until 12 months after Dicteer launches. After that, we delete them.
You can unsubscribe at any time. If you’d like us to delete your details, email info@dicteer.com and we’ll take you off the list.
This website
This website uses no cookies and no trackers. You can join the waitlist through the form on the site, or by email. The website runs on Vercel. Like any web server, Vercel processes technical data, such as your IP address, to serve and secure the pages.
Why we’re allowed to do this
- We process recordings and text to do what you ask: turn your voice into text.
- We use the waitlist because you signed up for it. You can withdraw that consent at any time.
- We use counts and IP hashes to prevent abuse.
Your rights
You can ask which data we hold about you, and have it corrected or deleted. You can also object. Email info@dicteer.com for any of this. We reply within a month. If you disagree with how we handle your data, you can file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
Changes
If anything changes in how Dicteer handles your data, we update this page. The date below shows when it was last changed.
